Death

Death rarely signifies physical death — instead, it represents the most profound form of transformation: the total dissolution of what was, making space for what will be. This card marks the end of a chapter, an identity, or a way of being that has served its purpose. What emerges on the other side is fundamentally new. When Death appears, resist the urge to cling to the dying form and trust the process of metamorphosis.

Reversed, Death suggests resistance to necessary endings, stagnation, or an incomplete transformation that leaves you suspended between the old and the new. You may be holding onto a relationship, job, or identity that has already ended in spirit. The invitation is to release your grip and allow what needs to die to die.

In love, Death can signal the end of a relationship or the death of old patterns within one. This is not necessarily tragic — many relationships are reborn stronger after shedding outdated dynamics. Trust that endings serve a purpose.

Professionally, Death indicates a significant career transition — a role ending, an industry changing, or a complete reinvention of your professional identity. What feels like loss will reveal itself as liberation.

Jung saw death and rebirth as the central mystery of the individuation process. The ego must "die" to its limited self-concept in order for the larger Self to emerge. This is the psychological meaning of Death in the tarot — the nigredo of alchemical transformation, the dark night of the soul that precedes illumination.
